  5.     Of all the African colonies that came to independence in the
  6. 1960s, few fared worse than the former Belgian Congo, now known
  7. as Zaire. The country endured army mutinies, civil wars,
  8. invasions and, through it all, 26 years of iron rule by
  9. President Mobutu Sese Seko. In due course, thanks in part to
  10. Zaire's copper wealth, Mobutu amassed billions of dollars, but
  11. he always took care to keep the army on his side -- until last
  12. week.

  14.     Furious because they were underpaid, soldiers mutinied in
  15. Kinshasa, looting and pillaging the capital, and civilians soon
  16. joined in. Belgium and France sent paratroops to help evacuate
  17. their nationals. Mobutu denounced the violence as an
  18. "insurrection." But by week's end he had agreed, for the first
  19. time ever, to share power with the opposition in a coalition
  20. government.
